The rarity of this issue cannot be understated. Let’s just take a quick look at some of the undisputed facts of this New Orleans gold coin.
1909 is the last year the New Orleans mint struck gold coins. It is also the only year that the Indian Head design was produced at the New Orleans mint. With only 34,200 coins struck it boast the lowest mintage figure of any business strike half eagle in the entire series, making it the key date king of the $5 Indians.
Looking at the population reports you will notice that even though the 1909-O is known in most all grades it is almost never available for sale as they are snapped up by collectors and investor alike. Please keep in mind, with a coin that is as numismatically significant many regrades are likely out there causing gradeflation throughout all grades.
Our AU 55 example is completely original, well struck with bold mint mark. Coins like this are very scarce as we haven’t handled even a single example of this key date New Orleans gold coin this year.
