Ancient Silver Coins of Alexander The Great
$389
These coins represent the vast number of issues minted in the name of Alexander the Great, the most successful general in history. His conquests required the production of enormous quantities of coins from mints across his empire, yet these are only a fraction of the total ‘Alexander’ coinage. Even after his death in 323 BC, various authorities continued to strike coins bearing his designs and inscriptions for many years. Much like the Owl of Athens in earlier centuries, Alexander’s silver coinage was the most widely accepted of its time, valued by the public for its trusted metal content.
The obverse of ‘Alexander’ coins features the head of Herakles wearing a lion skin, while the reverse depicts Zeus seated, holding an eagle. Different issues are identified by letters or symbols placed in the reverse fields or beneath Zeus’ throne.
