Description
Limited Mintage of 7,500
The Sacagawea dollar first debuted in 2000, honoring the young Shoshone woman who guided the Lewis and Clark expedition and symbolizing Native American contributions to American history. As part of its original launch, twelve specially struck half-ounce gold proof versions were flown aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in July 1999, making the Sacagawea dollar the first U.S. coin to travel in space before its release. The obverse revives Glenna Goodacre’s iconic portrait of Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste, modeled after Randy’L He-dow Teton, the only living person ever featured on U.S. currency. The reverse, by Thomas D. Rogers, depicts a soaring eagle encircled by seventeen stars, representing the Union at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
