Description
The first-year 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was originally struck as a commemorative to pay homage to President John F. Kennedy following his assassination. Interest in this first-year issue coin was very high due to the popularity of the fallen president, and people lined the street outside the Treasury building for their chance to obtain coins. These first-year Kennedy Half Dollars were struck in 90% silver — the only year these coins were struck in 90% silver for general circulation.
