Description

1908-S is the first truly low mintage St. Gaudens double eagle. By this period, the San Francisco mint was producing well struck coins with rich satiny luster. With an original mintage of only 22,000 coins, the survival rate is less than one half of one percent today. Most of the surviving coins are in low circulated grades, with only a handful of true uncirculated examples. The finest known 08-S is graded MS 67. There are six graded MS67 , a few of which are certainly resubmissions inflating the true population. When any of the MS66 or MS67 coins actually surface for sale they can(and have)fetched over $100,000.
Our coin is from a prominent east coast collector, who has sold me some monster rarities over the past 25 plus years. This one is no exception. This coin is struck well with plenty of original mint luster. Our representation is priced well below PCGS($8,000) & NGC($8,200) price guides. It is a toughie for collectors of dated St Gaudens. It is also a fantastic stand alone coin with lots of upside as accurately graded coins just don’t show themselves very often. Give me a call to discuss the coin if you have any questions.
