A Scarce New Orleans Mint Gold Coin

The 1906-O $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagle is an important rarity from the final years of gold coin production at the New Orleans Mint. It was the last $10 Gold Eagle struck at the facility and the second-to-last gold coin of any denomination produced there.

With an original mintage of only 86,895 coins, the 1906-O remains the scarcest New Orleans Mint Eagle struck after 1900. Although several hoard discoveries have increased its availability, most surviving examples grade between AU55 and MS62. The issue becomes scarce in MS63 and is rare in properly graded MS64.

PCGS MS63 With CAC Sticker

This 1906-O Liberty Head Eagle is certified MS63 by PCGS and carries a CAC sticker, recognizing it as a quality example within the assigned grade. It displays strong design detail, pleasing Mint State luster, attractive coloration, and excellent overall eye appeal.

The 1906-O is generally well struck for a New Orleans Mint gold coin. The reverse is typically sharp, while the obverse usually shows strong central definition. Finding an example with desirable surfaces and attractive original character can be challenging, adding to the appeal of this PCGS MS63 CAC coin.

Classic Liberty Head Gold Design

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states.

The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with a shield upon its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows. The inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the denomination “TEN D.”

The coin was struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, weighs 16.70 grams, measures 26.80 millimeters in diameter, and has a reeded edge.

Significance to Rare Gold Coin Collectors

As the final New Orleans Mint $10 Gold Eagle, the 1906-O holds exceptional historical and numismatic significance. Its limited mintage, scarcity in Select Mint State, CAC approval, and strong demand among collectors make it a highly desirable pre-1933 U.S. gold coin.

For collectors seeking a scarce branch-mint issue rather than simply its gold value, this 1906-O $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagle in PCGS MS63 CAC would make an outstanding addition to an advanced Liberty Head, New Orleans Mint, or rare U.S. gold coin collection.
