A Remarkably Scarce High-Grade Type 2 Gold Dollar
The 1855 Type 2 Gold Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, represents an important and distinctive chapter in early American gold coinage. While the issue recorded a mintage of 758,269 coins, surviving examples in higher collector grades are considerably more difficult to locate today.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the Type 2 Gold Dollar features the larger and more elaborate Indian Princess design, making it one of the most visually distinctive issues in the three year Type 2 series.
Condition & Grade
Our example is graded AU53, offering an attractive combination of strong remaining detail, limited wear, and the historical character collectors appreciate in pre 1933 U.S. gold coinage.
According to the CAC population data, there are only 2 examples graded AU53, with just 25 coins graded higher, highlighting the limited availability of certified examples at this grade level and above.
The Type 2 Gold Dollar
The Type 2 design was introduced in 1854 and features an enlarged portrait of Liberty wearing an elaborate Native American-style headdress inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.”
The reverse displays the denomination “1 DOLLAR” surrounded by a wreath, along with the date and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
Although the design was visually impressive, its larger diameter and thin planchet created production challenges. As a result, the Type 2 design was produced for only a short period before being replaced by the Type 3 Gold Dollar in 1856.

The 1855 Type 2 Gold Dollar offers collectors the opportunity to own a genuine piece of pre-Civil War American gold history and one of the shortest-lived design types in United States coinage.
